Response to Ohio Video

Calf and heifer raisers across the country are committed to caring for their animals, and ensuring their animals' health and safety are top priorities. The Dairy Calf & Heifer Association vehemently condemns the mistreatment of animals that took place on the farm in the video released today (May 26, 2010).

Additionally, the actions shown in the footage does not accurately reflect the care that farmers give their animals on a daily bases. Livestock producers have a moral and ethical obligation to care for their herds every day because, first and foremost, it is the right thing to do. DCHA supports a complete investigation of this matter and believes that appropriate disciplinary actions should be taken.

DCHA has established the Gold Standards program, outlining best practices to use when raising calves up to six months of age. The association is also in the midst of developing additional Gold Standards to illustrate guidelines for housing, nutrition, disease prevention and other animal welfare issues for adolescent and older heifers.
